Kratom, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has been a topic of concern in recent years due to the rise of synthetic versions of the drug. The natural kratom leaf acts as a stimulant in low doses and a sedative in high doses, and has been available in the U.S. for decades. However, the synthetic version of kratom, known as 7-OH, is causing alarm among health officials and advocates. This synthetic compound, MGM-15, is highly concentrated and activates the same receptors in the brain as prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl, posing a significant risk of addiction. The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics has warned of the dangers of synthetic 7-OH, noting an increase in overdoses related to products claiming to be kratom. The Global Kratom Coalition emphasizes the importance of understanding the difference between natural and synthetic kratom, as the latter can be up to 30 times more potent than the natural plant. The Kratom Protection Act, passed in 2025, imposes regulations on the sale of kratom products in Oklahoma, with a focus on labeling and ingredient disclosure. The FDA has recommended that 7-OH be listed as a Schedule I substance, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and consumer awareness to prevent harm and addiction.
